North Fork Payette River Watershed Coalilition
The North Fork Payette River Watershed Coalition brings together landowners, agencies, and community members to protect and improve water quality in our local watershed. This collaborative effort addresses critical issues including harmful algal blooms, sediment management, and Clean Water Act compliance while supporting the working ranches and recreational destinations that define Valley County.
The North Fork Payette River is the lifeblood of our community, providing water for agriculture, recreation, wildlife habitat, and downstream uses. However, like many watersheds across the West, it faces mounting pressures from nutrient loading, sediment delivery, and seasonal algal blooms that threaten water quality and ecosystem health. The Coalition was formed to bring diverse stakeholders together, ranchers, irrigators, recreationists, residents, and government agencies, to develop collaborative solutions that protect both water quality and the agricultural heritage of the region.
Through coordinated monitoring, restoration projects, and community engagement, the Coalition works to ensure the North Fork Payette River remains a healthy and vibrant resource for current and future generations. Efforts include riparian restoration along stream corridors, water quality monitoring to track progress, and implementation of best management practices on agricultural lands that reduce pollutant delivery to the river. The Coalition also works to secure funding for landowner cost-share projects that improve water quality while supporting productive working lands.
The Valley Soil and Water Conservation District serves as a key partner in this watershed-wide initiative, connecting landowners with resources and technical support for water quality improvement projects. By facilitating communication between federal, state, and local agencies—including the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and local irrigation districts—the District helps landowners navigate funding opportunities and technical assistance programs. Whether you're interested in riparian fencing, alternative livestock watering systems, or erosion control projects, the Coalition and the District are here to support your efforts to protect the watershed we all depend on.
